You don't need to be pedaling in a foreign country to run into road trouble. A couple years ago, and much closer to home, we took off on our bikes with a friend one autumn weekend to explore our New England county's less-traveled dirt roads. Deep into day one, thanks to the hard work of a beaver, our trail turned into a pond. We made it through, only to be detoured by Hurricane Irene destruction.
